VIBRANT HISTORY

Tallahassee has a vibrant, rich history, which can date back to before the Civil War. However, this vibrant history is also entangled with racism and the creation of enclaves after the Civil War. Most notably, Tallahassee’s Northeast quadrant is named Frenchtown, which is a predominately Black and severely underserved community.

POVERTY

The 2021 poverty rate in Tallahassee was 18.7% which is over 6% higher than the national average (Data USA, para 1). This means that over 67,000 individuals simply cannot afford to miss a day of work, let alone multiple days because of the flu. Being sick doesn’t mean just missing work, it also involves purchasing cold and flu medicine, going to the doctor, and requiring individuals to purchase sometimes expensive but necessary prescriptions. The CDC states, “Compared to White adults, flu hospitalization rates are: Nearly 80% higher among Black adults (para 1-2).” According to the 2018 census, the 32304 zip code is the poorest zip code in all of Florida (Casey, para 2). This zip code includes Frenchtown and Griffin Heights, two high crime and high poverty areas. Here, families struggle to pay for and cover basic needs, and healthcare is often neglected.  It is crucial to help these communities here in Tallahassee and limit the spread of the flu to help lift our area while also protecting those around us.
